Hi all, I feel so proud of myself, I went to the pool today for the first time in three years!! I had lost my confidence completely. With an improvement in my ra, I have been thinking about it for a while, found a pool with proper steps going into the water be it a lot further away than my local pool who only have a very embessasing looking hoist or ladder type steps. I dragged my daughter along with me just in case I needed rescueing! Had a wonderful time and felt so refreshed . I did manage to swim all be it with a woggle most of the time! I am going to become a member at a considerably reduced fee. It feels good to be doing normal things again, so don't give up hope folk it is possible. Zena X

Well done Zenna! I'm proud of you to! Wish I was able to do the same. I recently reduced my membership at the leisure centre to just general swim, however they have normal steps (I'm worried I can't get in or out of pool via steps) I have scaffolding in my foot forever, now limited in movement. Did you enjoy? I'm so happy to read of people being able to do something :-) Wot is next for you?! Take care Janexxx

That's brilliant Zena - having a splash in the water is lovely. You've definitely inspired me to go back to aqua-fit classes - they were such fun, and it's all about having the confidence and getting organised about actually getting there and in and out, once I'm in it's lovely. Hope you enjoy going regularly - do you have any classes at your pool so you can meet up with other people? Hi everyone, Glad you had a good time and enjoyed yourself. I recently decided I ought to learn to swim (never managed it as a child and then just put it off) booked myself in for lessons, that was a big step for me. Anyway after only three lessons I could manage a few strokes, am now on my 10th lesson and have been moved to a more advanced group. I really enjoy it and am very proud of myself for doing it. Happy swimming to one and all. Mary x

Mary that's very brave of you, well done. I've never been a great swimmer, but it's lovely to get the weight off as Dorothy said. I laugh and say that all my kids are far better swimmers than me, even when they were little, and now they're as big as me (my son is MUCH taller!!!!) they can rescue me when I get old and decrepit haha!!! Thanks all, I am looking forward to going again this week. Don't know if they do classes or not, will have to ask, just afraid they may be too difficult for me, I like to keep near to the side at the mo. hopefully will get braver as time goes on! Going on a week day and in daytime, the pool was fairly quiet. Everyone seemed to be of a similar age except my own daughter, and all were really friendly. Zena xx.

Hi Zena glad to hear you are enjoying swimming. I have started swimming this summer as well. I used to do gentle aquarobics for years but the exercises became more zumba based and together with more foot problems, became too much for me. I now try to swim twice a week and it seems to be doing me good physically and mentally.

Hi Bev - have fun swimming - it's so good to keep joints moving. My local leisure centre does a Prime Life Aerobics class - it's subsidised and I think that all local councils are encouraged to do something similar to support those who're not quite as mobile! It's basically walking for warm-up, with gentle stretches, followed by a type of circuit training, but all the stations are geared up for over-50s participants, so there's things like stepping around a beam and bouncing a giant ball - usually results in much laughter as the ball has a mind of its own!
